Why Men Prefer Blondes
Published by Colin July 23rd, 2007 in NewsAlright, so Psychology Today has released a controversial article (via The Legal Soapbox), that is sure to raise a few eyebrows. The article is entitled: Ten Politically Incorrect Truths About Human Nature. It basically talks about the biological influences on human behavior and tries to explain how our subconscious mind makes us think or feel in certain ways.
I would recommend reading the entire article if you have a time, as it presents many points that may seem controversial, offensive or just plain outlandish. Some of the topics covered explain the reason why: most suicide bombers are Muslim; beautiful people have more daughters; humans are naturally polygamous; sexual harassment isn’t sexist; and blonds are more attractive. Of course, the last point is what I will be focusing on in this article because ya know… that’s my specialty.
Point one in the article reads: Men like blond bombshells (and women want to look like them).
Women’s desire to look like Barbie—young with small waist, large breasts, long blond hair, and blue eyes—is a direct, realistic, and sensible response to the desire of men to mate with women who look like her. There is evolutionary logic behind each of these features.
For all my blonde readers who can’t be bothered to read the entire article, I will try my best to summarize it for you. In a nutshell, all those ideal features it has listed can be linked to youthfulness in some way. As younger woman are more likely to be healthier and more fertile (in general), possessing those attributes makes a woman a more desirable partner for men. So, our evolutionary instincts subconsciously dictates that those features more attractive for a potential female partner to possess.
So how is blonde hair related to youthfulness? Typically, young girls with light blonde hair turn into darkheads as they age. Thus, men who prefer to mate with blonde women are unconsciously attempting to mate with younger, healthier and more fertile partners. While men realize they aren’t really after little girls (we hope!), they still find those features attractive because the subconscious evolutionary thoughts still exist.
Honestly, I found this logic to be a little bit off. It doesn’t seem to account for the numerous countries in the world where blonde hair would never exist naturally, such as Asia, India and parts of Africa. Why would a Chinese or African man link blonde hair to youthfulness when in their ethnic backgrounds, none of their children would ever have blonde hair in the first place? I suppose they are writing it to their intended audience - North American and European markets - where this would hold true, but it seems like shoddy journalism to neglect other parts of the world when putting together a study like this. Ironically, the article is co-authored by Dr. Satoshi Kanazawa, who looks every bit Eastern Asian to me, which makes it more puzzling as to why he would buy into that theory.
My Take
While I can’t completely discredit their theory, for me personally I prefer blondes for other reasons. While I can’t speak for all men, it has to do with the color itself for the most part. I find the blonde color, especially light blonde, very feminine. For the same reason that many women say their prefer men with dark hair because it is more ‘masculine,’ I see blonde as being a very intrinsically feminine quality.
Also, the yellow color itself is very attractive to the eye. In color theory, they state that the colors red, orange and yellow will come to the foreground and stand out in front of other colors. So in a crowd of blondes and brunettes, the yellow of the blonde hair will catch your attention first. Seeing a blonde is also some what of a mild anti-depressant. When you’re feeling down, a bright sunny day can often cheer you up. Similarly, a head of bright blonde hair can cheer you up too as it shares the same color properties. 
Although I have no scientific studies to back up my theory, it still seems more plausible to me than the blonde = youth one. Now the question remains… what do YOU think?

My sister is very, very blonde (natural). It has always been very easy to see her from a distance. Mum could always spot her in the playground when she was little too. My sister’s hair is a beautiful colour, definitely cheerful. My daughter loved it when she was a tiny baby.
I once had a Japanese guy who was in love with my hair. I’m not blonde - used to be blonde-red-brown all mixed together - he found this fascinating… I wasn’t so impressed with him, and told him I was happy to cut off a bit of my hair for him so that he would go away!!
I actually read an article in the Times a few months ago that talked about this same topic. Basically they said that men prefer blondes because it is essentially a “breath of fresh air.” I guess in neolithic times the women were all brunettes and all of a sudden a new adaption to evolution appeared, a blond came into the picture.

I love being blonde it makes me feel girly and feminine. Its also says something that my boyfriends EX girfriends were all dark and im the only Blonde and hes stuck with me! I think we have more fun and also maybeless common sense??? But we get away with it and i think to a point men like it!!
Girls, please, learn to spell! I agree that yes, we blondes have more fun and are more desirable. I have no scientific proof but hey, my blonde friends and I have a hell of a good time and that’s good enough for me!
Regarding the article, I think that one of the reasons blondes are more attractive is also the element of scarcity - there are obviously significantly fewer blondes and anyone can find a brunette! I have also heard that blonde women can be something of a status symbol for men (probably to do with the aforementioned representation of youthfulness and fertility). While I don’t condone this objectification of women, in some twisted way it’s nice to be appreciated…sort of…
Incidently, the smartest women I know (close friends, my mother, etc.) are blonde - and some of the least intelligent I know are brunettes.
It may be of interest to some blondes to know that we are also going to become extinct within the next several centuries. Genetically speaking, blonde is not a dominant gene - so the more we breed with darker-haired men, the fewer of us there will be. Enjoy being blonde while there are still some of us around!
Hey Kris - good point on the status symbol. I thought I had mentioned it in this article but I guess I hadn’t.
I like to call it the “Trophy-wife” syndrome. It’s like if you’re with a hot blonde and you’re walking down the street or in a mall you’re going to get more attention (from both guys and girls). So, while the blonde will garner most of the attention, you get a secondary ego boost from it because she’s with YOU.
I’ve always been blonde, but as i got older i got darker so i now have to lighten my hair. But thats cool id never want to be dark!
My nan would never let me get my hair cut too much because she said out of everyone she could spot me due to my long blonde hair. So now shes not with us anymore i feel my hair is of great sentimental to me because it makes me think of her!

I love my blond hair, although last year I changed to dark brown, and immediately noticed the difference, I work in retail, and found that customers were less likely to argue with me with brown hair, I found I got more respect and in fact had more intelligent conversations with people when out and about, I’m back to blond now, but sometimes miss the strange confidence boost I felt with Brunette hair.
Did it ever occur to anyone that the reason why Blondes have been claimed as the ultimate woman because it is ultimately white? Think about it! ONLY Europeans can naturally have Blonde hair. And blue eyes. It’s about politics and power. Sure, reed hair is another exclusively white hair colour, but it can look brown (And red hair is even less common than Blonde!). By pushing the blonde look into the media, it pshes out other races. Only whites can attain this look. And if you have soething pushed in your face enough, you begin to believe that it’s just a natural occurance, that Blondes are the hottest and most desirable. And what about black hair???? It’s not just divided between blonde and brunette, or does brunette now symbolise non-blonde hair coulor? I’m not trying to be mean, but the whole blonde thing is just another beauty myth.
I am naturally blonde. I was white blonde as a kid but as soon as I turned 12 it went a horrible dull brown. At 17 I decided to go blonde again as it is my natural colour and I have blue eyes. I actually freak out when I start getting the mousy brown roots! But really I think that it is not fair or true to say that blondes are more attractive - perhaps because blondes fit the so called social stereotype and this makes them more confident. I often look at ginger and brunette women and envy them. I think we should appreciate all hair colours - i have seen plenty of bottle blondes with black roots who make me cringe.

I enjoy being blonde, i enjoy it because it suits me more than being brunette, i can honestly say im quite an outspoken bubbly and happy person but i do not always enjoy the attention i get, as im quite shy when it comes to that. I used to hate that when i tell people im doing a fashion design BA they think im stupid and a bimbo, cus i tell you what you want to try it, you have to learn pattern cutting, measuring what seams attatch to what and their fancy names, we have to be creative and get ideas from our heads onto paper, we have to be able to draw, we have to learn to sew, not just any sewing on industrial machines sewing curves and top stitching, we have to to alot more and time manage it to. so there people who are on my course realise how hard it is. And to top off my little entry here I am very proud to be blonde and be apart of the fashion industy and will not let anyone pull me down because of the colour of my hair or for what i want my future career to be in! It does make me chuckle. I am a blonde and yes I do have lots of fun and have never had any problems getting a boyrfriend.. but I think that hair colour is nothing to do with it . . if you are a wallflower you will always be one does not matter if you are a red head a blonde or a brunette

I love blonde hair, but too many girls are bottled blonde now. My natural hair colour is a pukey gross mousy brownish- dark blonde. According to my stylist it is THE most common hair colour she dyes or highlights, and almost always some shade of blonde. I can attest to that- I get highlights to make the mousy colour look less disgusting. Can’t blame me for that. I just hate to see over- processed blonde hair, it looks sooo skanky and worse that mousy I think. Just a few subtle highlights really make it better!
Even though I’m a brunette, I often dye my hair platinumblonde. It looks quite good and natural on me because I have very light skin, plus everyone notices me and I get so much more attention from people everywhere. This may sound terrible, but being blonde really makes me so much more confident with my own looks.
I mean, as a child, we play with Barbies. Then we grow up watching musicvideos of Britney-kind of people, and have you noticed that almost all fairytales have blonde princesses? And the witch always has dark hair.
Even in stupid little series like Lizzie McGuire, the blonde always gets to wear the nice stuff and she gets to have the cute boyfriends, and the brunette is usually the jealous one.

I can not stand some quick tempered blondes, specially if impatient or pretentious. A mature person always appeals me man or woman. Its true personality links also a bit with skin color. Similar persons would be more suitable/agreeable to live with eachother. But I would also agree blondes are sexy,vivacious and associate with happines which is beautiful.

The name given to the “blonde” hair colour actually derives from the latinate origin of “bland” meaning to be lacking in colour and therefore men actually prefer redheads due to their intense and bright colour which is far more likely to stand out from the crowd than hair lacking in colour- sorry guys :/
Natural blonde hair is beautiful because it is so are and reminds people of sunshine and innocense and is equally lovely on men and women but the same cannot be said of mousy locks dyed blonde. Dyed blonde hair rarely looks good. The only woman who I have seen pull it off is Debbie Harry. Most women who dye their hair blonde are women of northern European origin whose hair is naturally an unfortunate shade of mousy. Alot of men seem to prefer dyed blondes from a sexual perspective because they have come to be synomymous with fast sex and the supremacy of the white anglo saxon protestant via American mass media. The supremacy of blondes is rammed down everyones throats until the masses begin to believe it is second nature. Personally speaking you can’t beat latin beauty, big almond shaped chocolate brown eyes, olive skin and luscious jet black hair. As a boring pale northern European type I wish I looked latin. To the men who claim to like brunettes or black haired women more than blondes, sure, this can be true. Our experiences growing up have something to do with sexual preference of course. I have a white male friend who almost exclusively prefers asian or latino women. I’m guessing that at some point in his youth he had a really nice experience with an exotic looking woman or at some point when he was younger he found an asian/latino woman very attractive and his tastes developed from there. As are rule though, men are going to prefer blondes. In a crowd, whether it’s a club or the grocery store, a blonde is going to turn heads quicker. I don’t think there is just a single reason for this, but I do think there is a reason none of you have specifically mentioned yet. That is, blonde and blue/green eyes is just prettier. Blonde hair often looks softer, silkier, and warmer and in a crowd really stands out in contrast to other hair colors. Blue and green eyes often sparkle.

I think a lot of men find blondes attractive cos they are brainwashed by the media that it’s the hottest also they are imaged as sex object. Sex thing only, most men don’t take them seriously. Most of these men end up marrying brunette. Personally, i don’t find blondes tht attractive. I just don’t get it.

I think that humans in general are naturally attracted to the yellow color. (Notice how humans through out history are crazy about gold.) Is known as gold fever. As you can see humans are naturally attracted to gold simply because of its color and its shine. Noticed how many women go blonde because they like it or think is more pure and beautiful. On the other hand women seldom go brunette, and if they do is because I think they are curios to know how they would look or feel if they were brunette. Regardless of race or ethnic background, humans in general love gold, a beautiful sunny day, and the blue skies. (blue eyes). When I see a beautiful blonde girl with dark eyes, I feel she would look more pretty if she would have blue or green eyes (blue eye better for me). By the way to have blonde hair and blue eyes is not enough to be all attractive. Alone with that the girl needs to have the perfect body and the perfect face. (most blonde/blue eye women don’t have the body and face to claim that beauty, simply because is also a fact that true physical beauty weather blonde or brunette is rare. So to fine a naturally beautiful blonde hair/blue eye woman is very hard. Not to sound absolutely vain, I think the beauty of the spirit will always surpass any physical beauty. Oh great. My natural hair color is so dark it’s nearly black. My eye color is so dark it’s nearly black. My skin color is pale, porcelain like. I’d just like to feel appreciated by this society for once as something beautiful. But apparently I’m not as beautiful solely because of the color of my hair and eyes. Don’t even take into consideration my facial features and the harmony or grace in my face and body because I’m a lowly dark haired girl, so I don’t count. Now I understand how dark skinned women feel when they are considered inferior to white females. It sucks.
But don’t you ever stop to think that maybe the reason blonde girls feel they get more attention, and probably do, is because the media has portrayed blondes as the stereotypical hot girl? Maybe blonde hair and blue eyes is the ‘ideal’ color to be born with, but as the guy above me said there is more to beauty than the color of ones hair and eyes. If you’re busted blonde hair and blue eyes won’t make you pretty. Sorry. Seeing though as they are only colors and not shape, I don’t see how this changes anything and makes an already beautiful girl more beautiful if she only possesed light eyes and skin. In fact other combinations of color are equally as striking and different people have different tastes. So I have to disagree with you on that Fernando.
I can see how in the cavemen era, blonde women were rare and stood out. But we’re no longer cavemen and women. Obviously natural blondes are still rare (red hair is even more rare) but it almost doesn’t seem so where I live. When I go out the majority of girls are blonde, dyed or not. I was under the impression most guys found most blonde girls vanilla and ordinary because of this, I also haven’t noticed that my blonde friends turn more heads than I do, because well there are so many blondes. beauty myths are dumb and people upholding them need to open their eyes. they leave out a lot of people who can never attain them, and a lot of people which are drop dead gorgeous regardless ( do i even need to name the ridiculously beautiful, famous brunettes as examples?) if you haven’t seen a gorgeous brunette equally gorgeous as a blonde at least once in your life i don’t know what planet you’re from. and the reason beauty myths are dumb is because they aren’t fact so it’s not just ’sorry it’s the way it is’. actually no it’s not, not everyone thinks like you. in fact most don’t.

If blonde hair is more feminine and associated with youth and fertility (and so are blue eyes?) these are still only two of many qualities. What if there is a girl with big, wide set eyes, cute nose and what have you and looks pretty and youthful but happens to have dark hair and eyes. Then there is a blonde girl who happens to not have features as youthful and feminine as the brunette’s? The brunette will be more sexually attractive unconsciously because she amasses a larger quantity of desirable traits. No one’s perfect. But even if a girl did posses *all* of said feminine and youthful characteristics in her face and topped it off with light hair and eyes there will still be people that find someone else more attractive. Some people will just prefer dark hair or other combinations. Maybe a girl’s dark hair and eyes has a way of looking feminine and alluring to someone ( long and thick, curly lashes anyone?) Naturally light blonde girls dont posses natural dark and thick eyelashes-just an example. There is no most beautiful and most desirable. People have different preferences and tastes.
Let me correct this before I get attacked MOST naturally LIGHT blonde girls don’t posses natural thick, curly eyelashes. If they do it’s very rare.

I think all hair colors are beautiful, and I have been most of them. Where does the battle end with natural blondes vs bleached blondes, brunettes, readheads, etc. (vice versa)? It is just hair and can be used as an expression of yourself. Personally, I think that blonde hair radiates the skin more and gives an overall glow to a face, but that is just my opinion. Anyone can look great, with a little grooming. Right?

I am a brunette with light grey eyes. I also have an hourglass figure. I have always had men express their attraction to me, probably because I’m fit and healthy. I really don’t think it has anything to do with my hair color.
